Probably one of the most recognized semiprecious gemstones is existence, Turquoise has been popular since prehistoric times. It occurs naturally in shades ranging from sky blue to grey-green.
Turquoise means "Stone of Turkey". Although Turquoise doesn't actually originate in Turkey, it earned its name because it was traded in Turkish bazaars.

Throughout history, Turquoise has been thought to protect and bring good fortune to those who wear it. The color is even used in hospitals to evoke a calming effect on patients who suffer from anxiety or depression. December could not ask for a birthstone with greater heritage and meaning.

The name Citrine comes from the French "citron", or "lemon", for its color, and is actually a type of Quartz. Most Citrine today is actually heat-treated Amethyst. Natural Citrine is not common and occurs in lighter hues than the heat-treated material.

Day 13: Boquete Back to Panama City

Ok, I am sad. It's hard to say goodbye to such a serene and lovely place. For the past four days, it has felt like we have been living at the home of a long lost friend. We have been welcomed with open arms and much generosity here at Manana Madera Coffee Estate. For anyone who would like an exquisite and relaxing experience, I would highly recommend this little slice of heaven.
I just can't resist a comfortable hammock...this time in the Ranchito.

Yesterday we took a little day trip over to Los Lojas Beach on the Pacific side....6 miles of unspoiled beach. Since it was a Monday, we were the only ones there, free to pick up beautiful shells and enjoy the low tide where we could walk out 1/4 mile before putting our feet in the water.

Today we fly back to Panama City for one last night there before our return home.
This is the sunset we experienced last night...a beautiful sendoff. They call it "Pinky"....

Day 10: Made In The Shade

Boquete is coffee country, but as you look around and scan the hillsides, all you see are shady trees, particularly oranges. If it is a coffee farm, you'll see tall shrubs below and around the trees...coffee.
Here is Randy and Jamies house, surrounded by lush fruit trees (banana, orange, lemon, avocado) and tons of coffee...

We got a first hand tour and education today from Randy about the whole process from growing to bagging. The coffee here is Arabica and Randy has a blend of four types. He harvests from November to February, and he only picks them when they turn purple.

They are then sun-dried and he stores them in large burlap bags for up to 7 months. At different stages, he takes them out, puts them thru a separater, then roasts them. The formula he uses for roasting is an exact science, making all the difference in a great or not-so-great coffee. He receives this formula from professional "cuppers", who he pays every year to come out and rate the coffee.

As true coffee connoisseurs in Boquete will point out, dark roasts are often used to mask low-quatity coffee. Gourmet coffees tend to get a lighter roast, allowing as they say here is Boquete, to "taste the coffee, not the roast".

Day 9: Bocas del Toro to Boquete

After leaving Isla Popa, we spent one night on Bocas del Toro so we could get an early start the next morning to our next destination...Boquete.

And Hello to Boquete...known as the city of eternal spring, this gorgeous highland destination enjoys an enviably scenic location on the eastern flank of Volcan Baru, Panama's only volcano, long extinct. Roads lined with every imaginable flowering shrub hearld a world of exquisite beauty. Coffee estates abound due to the high elevation and perfect year round climate temperatures of 68 to 78 degrees. We are spending our time here at the Manana Madera Coffee Estate, where they grow and process a small specialty reserve coffee...one of the most delicious coffees I've tasted yet.

It is owned by a wonderful American couple, Randy & Jamie, who said goodbye to the corporate life in Texas four years ago, moved here, bought this gorgeous piece of heaven, built their home for $28.00 per square foot and became coffee farmers. Part of their house includes this guest house where we are staying for 4 nights. It has its own entrance, a luxurious bedroom, bath and living/dining area with all the amenities and an incredible view of their property. This is our view as we dine each morning on chef Randy's fabulous breakfast....

....And we are always in the company of the ever present "Chubs" their sad-eyed, very large pup.

They also have a beautiful "Ranchita" where we can sit and enjoy sunrises and the view.

It has been cloudy and drizzling rain, but where else can you be at 5000 feet, with rain forest, tropical flowers, pine trees and a minimum temp of 68 degrees!!
Tomorrow Randy is going to give us a start-to-finish tour of the whole plantation and process, so that will be my next blog.

Day 7: Still here on Isla Popa

It’s Wednesday and we’re still on the Island of Popa…..R&R has never been better! We are finally sharing this paradise with other guests and have been hanging out with a couple gals from San Diego and a family from Zurich, Switzerland.

Yesterday we took the boat with our new friends over to the Island of Zapatilla loaded with a picnic lunch, snorkels and beach chairs. It was a beautiful day spent with good company.

We will be here until Friday morning, at which time we head for the town of Boquete, which is Panama’s best coffee growing region. See you there…..

Lobster Tacos

Without a doubt, these are by far one of the best things I have ever eaten! They catch the lobster fresh each day and this has been our lunch the past two days. I'm truly in food heaven....sigh

Day 4 and 5: Popa Paradise Beach

After arriving on the Island of Bocas del Toro, we had a nice breakfast at the Popa's sister hotel on Bocas while awaiting our water transit over to Popa. There are many little islands in this area and we chose Popa for its beauty, solitude and natural preserve. We were not disappointed.
The first thing I did was take a nap in the most inviting and comfortable hammock ever (we had to get up at 4:00 AM for our early morning flight over).

This place is remote and beautiful, and as it turns out, we are currently the only guests. They are expecting more in a couple days but in the meantime, they feed us when we want and what we want...the ultimate relaxation.
It is a bit overcast with possible rain coming. Panama does not have four seasons as we know them. They have only a wet season and a dry season. Otherwise the temperature stays constant pretty much all year. It is currently the rainy season. They have not seen rain however in two weeks so will welcome it any day.

Our bungalow is lovely and private, where we can see and not be seen. It has a beautiful view of the beach and ocean from the lanai out the back.

In the middle of the night, the rains did come...thunder and lightening like I've never seen. In the morning it was still raining, but not hot or humid, which was nice. We ate breakfast outside on the patio, just us.

Day 3: Panama Canal Cruise

The Panama Canal, nearing its 100th year anniversary was quite something to experience. We cruised aboard the "Pacific Queen" and had the unique opportunity to see the Canal up close in operation. We transitted with the big ships and experienced the process up close and personal.

There are three locks and we experienced two of them. This is the Miraflores Lock where our vessel was raised 18 meters in two distinct steps.

There are two chambers for each set of locks (Northbound and Southbound). As we approach the first lock you can see the other chamber to the right.

Each time the chamber fills, it uses 26 million gallons of fresh lake water. We were in the chamber by ourselves, but they often try to double up if possible to conserve water. When a big container ship goes through, there is only two feet to spare all around.
These next two pictures show how the water has risen-it only takes 8 minutes-and the gates are now opening. We then travel across the large Lake Milaflores to the next set of locks, the Pedro Miguel Locks (on the Pacific side), which raise us again to the level of the next Lake-Lake Gatun.

After traveling through this lake, we enter the Gaillard Cut, which was carved throuth the Continental Divide. This is where our trip ends.

We passed many other ships on their way through. If we were to have continued, there would be one more set of locks which would then lower us back down to sea level on the other side.
Since this was built nearly 100 years ago, it is unable to accomodate today's supertankers, so they are currently working on the 6 billion dollar expansion project, which will be done in 2114.
This was amazing!!
Tomorrow, an early morning flight will land us on the Island of Bocas del Toro and then we'll ferry over to the Isla Popa. It's now R&R time on the Carribean side tropical islands of Panama (where several International Survivor shows have taken place). Stay tuned....

Day 2: We made it...Now in Panama!!

After our red-eye flight out of LAX (left at 2:00 AM), we are now in Panama City. We are staying at the Country Inn Suites right on the Isthumus to the Panama Canal. A steady stream of container and cruise ships travel thru going North and South. This is a picture from the balcony of our room.

In the distance is the "Bridge of the Americas" which is the Pan American highway that connects all of the Americas-North, South and Central.
The weather here is a "pleasant" 86 degrees with about 70-80% humidity....ouch, I think I miss my dry heat back home!

Today we visited the Old Panama City "Casco Viejo" , which was the heart of the city during the first decades of the 20th century. Declared a World Heritage Site in 1997, it is a city within the city and great for a walking tour.

That's me with my new Panama hat...can't go home without one when you come to Panama.
Ok, so tomorrow we take a one day cruise of the canal and locks....should be beautiful and interesting. See you afterward!

While exploring an unfamiliar bead shop recently, I came across a wonderful gemstone I had never seen before...Aura. It looks similar to dichroic glass, however it is actually a natural clear Crystal that has a permanent, transparent coating on its surface. It is created in a vacuum chamber from Quartz Crystals and gold vapor by a process known as vapor deposition. The exact process is a trade secret, but is said to be a combination of heat, pressure and exposure to vaporized pure gold. The gold atoms are permanently bonded to the Crystal's surface, which gives the Crystal its iridescent metallic sheen.
This Blue Quartz and Aura bracelet is my first piece using this gorgeous stone and I look forward to using it in more creations. Read more about this bracelet here. It is also the newest member of my new ENERGY bracelet section at my shop.

Ok, so I'm signing on late to this wonderful event, but as they say, better late than never.....
My name is Holly Louen and I live in Clovis, California, smack in the middle of the state.
Welcome to Tuscan Road Designs! I am a handmade Artisan jewelry designer. It all began with a trip to Murano, Italy. After touring the glass and bead factories on this island, I was hooked. Upon returning home, I promptly signed up for a Lampwork class at the local glass store to learn how to make my own beautiful beads. I then taught my teenage son how to do it, and that became a great bonding time for us, thus the beginning of Tuscan Road Designs. My inspirations come from nature, architecture, Old World icons…..and especially the world around me as I have seen it from numerous travels. And now, I look forward to this new, exciting journey called One World One Heart.
My door prize is a feel-good, romantic charm necklace with a copper word plate with "Kisses" etched on it. Hanging with it is a brass locket and a tiny dusty rose colored paper rose. Attached a little ways up the antiqued copper chain is a Rhodonite gemstone bead. It fastens at the back with a lobster clasp and the length of the chain is 24". The pendant is 1 1/2".

Tomorrow's Treasures, Loved Today

When I saw this pendant in a little shop in Ko Samui, Thailand, it just spoke to me. Now, 6 months later, I have finally figured out just how to showcase this beauty. A scrolled frame of sterling silver wraps around two faceted round green Peridot gemstones, two brilliant purple, faceted oval Amethyst gemstones and a smooth oval, pale green Prehnite gemstone. The size of this pendant is 1 3/8" at it's widest and 2 1/4" long.
The beaded necklace is made up of faceted rondelles of pale, grass green Prehnite and soft Amethyst with the occasional textured sterling beads and Swarovski crystal in an eggplant color. The necklace length is 23" and it closes at the neck with a sterling toggle.

*Prehnite is a stone of unconditional love, and its color and unusual touch generate serenity and tranquility. This is the crystal that heals the healer. Prehnite teaches how to be in harmony with nature and allows one to always be prepared. It is also believed to enhance one’s protective field and is known as a stone for “dreaming and remembering”.

*Amethyst is the most highly prized variety of Quartz and is the official birthstone for February. This stone is said to protect the wearer from drunkenness, and for this reason in ancient days, wine goblets were often carved from it. Western mystics say the stone helps instill the highest ideals and urges one to do what is right. They also claim Amethyst cures impatience, alleviates feelings of victimization, balances high energy, eliminates chaos and helps keep one grounded.

Reflection and Inspiration

I was just reflecting on a trip we took in 2006 to Italy. We rented this villa in Tuscany and it was one of the most wonderful things we ever did. We will do it again someday....
But in looking at my pictures, I also remember how much inspiration I get from our trips around the world. Every creative endeavor requires some sort of inspiration to fuel the process, and it can arrive at any time and in any form-a person, nature, music, a favorite place or a new place. The road between an idea and a finished piece is a winding one that starts and stops, changes direction, and may not even resemble the original thought at the end. But it's really about the journey.
So surround yourself with the beautiful, with interesting things and places. Then watch your creativity flow.

Minun uusi pyora (My new bike)

My son Justin has been in Finland for nearly four weeks on a work/study program through Cal Poly State University. Putting aside my I-miss-him-terribly moments, this experience so far has been beyond wonderful for him. Upon arrival and settling into his apartment with his roommates, they were all given bikes to use as their mode of transportation. For his first week of instruction, they took a week long "field trip" up into the Lapland reagon and Oulanka National Park, where they backpacked, saw the Northern Lights, Raindeer and just plain beauty and solitude. What a way to begin his experience!

Crossing the Atctic Circle

This was the furthest North Justin has ever been and already nights got to freezing (in August)-understandably not a place to visit in the winter. Quite a culture shock for a college surf dude living in Southern California!

Now that he's back at his school (taking 15 units), he's been trying to at least learn the basics of the Finish language as there is nothing similar about it and English. The area is beautiful and now that August is almost over, they say so is Summer. Let the cold begin....

Brilliant Sparkly Crystals

Time to Eat

When it's time to eat, there is no shortage of choices. If you want McDonalds, there's McDonalds with a Thai twist. If you want Starbucks, they have those too. But what we love most are what they call "fresh BBQ"...and fresh it is. Everything of a fish-nature is caught that day, then beautifully displayed on ice with free samples to entice even the pickiest eater as you stroll by. Everyone wants you to try their restaurant and it seems there are a bazzilion of then, but we found one we really liked and ate there probably four times. This is their sign:

Not only was their food wonderful, but where elce can you get fresh Jumbo Prawn, lobster, blue crab or Australian fillet, for around $11.00!

Thai Massage

One of the things we really look forward to are the massages. Their menu boards have a variety to choose from and they can be customized. Massage here is way less expensive then anything back home, so needless to say, we spoil ourselves when we're here. $100 Thai Baht = $3.22 USD, so a $250 TB hour long massage is $8.00!!
This morning Mike and I had foot treatments where they completely smooth the rough skin, then message your feet and legs up to the knees for an hour. When they are done, your feet are as smooth and soft as a baby's.....heaven!
Tanner wanted an hour of his two favorite areas: feet and hands.

Afterward, lunch at our favorite hotel, Poppies was just what we needed. Poppies is a beautiful small, intimate boutique hotel right on the beach. There are only 22 individual bungalows and they usually let us choose which one we want. Here are some pics from Poppies today:

Lucky Balloons

The lucky balloon is a tradition here and we send some off every time we come. They consist of a round cylinder shape about 18” in diameter and 4’ tall, and made of either tissue or fine white cloth. At the bottom is a lighter ring that you light. Then like a hot air balloon, it fills with the hot air then rises up and away. With it goes all your bad luck and any wish you make or prayer you say for someone. It’s always lit at night and you watch it until it becomes just a speck in the sky. Tanner is bringing some home. When he sends one off, someone will probably report it as a UFO or something “strange in the sky”.

Koh Samui

The island of Koh Samui is near and dear to our hearts. Of all the regions, cities and islands of Thailand, Koh Samui is the only area we’ve come to every time we’ve come to Thailand. The island is beautiful with fine, white sand beaches, crystal clear water only waist deep for ¼ mile out and fabulously friendly people. When we come, we are sure to visit the friends we’ve made: there’s Jeffrey, the Planet Scuba guy from England who Tanner has taken previous classes and dives with. He’s goofy in a fun sort of way. I think he’s had too much Nitrox! Phu has four little shops where she sells wonderful string lights and “Lucky Balloons” (more on that later). Lek, a best friend for sure, we have “known” for ten years, which is how long we’ve been coming here. She works in the restaurant at our favorite boutique hotel, Poppies and feeds us whenever we show up. Every time we come, she tells me how she and I just don’t age. Only my sons age. I love Lek!

Farewell to Koh Tao

Our last night was bittersweet. This portion of the trip has been wonderful and most relaxing. On our last night we sat and watched the sunset, which was absolutely spectacular. Wish we could bottle it up and bring it home with us!

Winding Down in Koh Tao

Mike and Tanner had their day on the scooters while I relaxed with a good book at the beach and pool. You can never have too much relaxing on this sort of trip! No helmets required. All ages ride scooters. One of the funniest things they saw was a man with two kids balanced on the back of the scooter, one kid on his lap plus a rather large dog sitting in the front where you put your feet. These scooters really aren't that big!

At almost every spot of this resort is a wonderful view of something.

Tanner finished his dive course and is now PADI certified as a rescue diver. The last day was particularly grueling as he had to rescue an “unconscious” diver and haul his dead weight up the boat ladder five times. Needless to say, he was up for a nice Thai massage at the end of the day. This is a picture he took from the dive boat looking back at the beach and town.

We have one more day in Koh Tao, then it's off to Koh Samui to see some familiar faces that we have met over the years and are sure to visit each time we return.

Day 7

We're still on the island of Koh Tao for three more days. Tanner is progressing in his rescue dive course and when done, will have his Master Diver's license, quite an achievement for a 17 year old! His other love is fishing and he manages to get a little in each morning prior to breakfast and class. Here's his first catch...rather small and he had no idea what it was!

Mike and I did some exploring today on Honda scooters. It was a blast and we pretty much saw most of the island which is only 8 miles long. The beaches here are beautiful, scenery is lush and where we are staying...The Sensi Paradise Resort, feels like a tropical rain forest with beaches. We have a rustic but well appointed bungalow that overlooks the water. Here's a view from our porch...

I think I need one of these at home. What I would save on gas!!

What's a Tuk Tuk?

No trip to Bangkok would be complete without a ride in a Tuk Tuk. Basically, a Tuk Tuk is a motorcycle taxi. It zips along ignoring most rules of the road and if the traffic is horrific it will probably get you there sooner then a regular taxi. Unlike a taxi, it has no meter, so the driver's stated fee is always up for negotiation.

Before leaving Bangkok, we visited Ayutthaya, one of the World Heritage sights. We got there when it opened at 9:00 and tripped through it all by ourselves which was awesome. To be able to walk around, stand on and climb something so old and magnificant was amazing- sort of like when we climbed the Great Wall of China back in 87.

Another highlight was the giant Gold Buddah at one of the several temples we stopped at. It is an honor to be able to enter these temples and place gold leaf flakes on the statues as a sign of respect and for good luck.

Bangkok Airport.....HUGE

Today is Friday,and after flying from Bangkok to Koh Samui, we took the ferry over to this beautiful island of Koh Tao. We have not seen this island yet and heard it has the best diving. Tanner is the diver in the family and has his advanced dive certification. For the next three days he will be taking an intense rescue dive course. I plan on doing some serious exploring to see what exotic beads and components I can find for my jewelry designs-on a treasure hunt so-to-speak.

Thailand Day 1

Ok, so we finally made it to Bangkok-26 hours later and 8100 miles from home. It usually takes around 20 hours, but we had an unusually long layover in San Francisco and then again at Narita Airport in Tokyo, Japan. As I write this it is 4:10 PM Wednesday, which makes it 2:10 AM Wednesday back home (14 hours ahead)
Surprisingly we woke up fairly early the first day. Bangkok is a huge city (pop 17 million) so we pretty much take taxis or tuk tuk's where ever we go. It's very hot and humid so we go out mainly in the mornings and evenings. This morning we saw the famous Queen Saovabha Snake Institute (Tanner and his snakes!) then pretty much hung out at the pool until it clouded over. We have seen pretty much all the main Temples, floating market, etc on previous trips so this time we are catching the few things we missed before. Tomorrow is a day trip to Ayutthaya, the ancient city and former Thai Capital for over 400 years. Mid July is the start of monsoon season and they can get some rather heavy rains. We're here in Bangkok for 3 days then off to the islands of Koh Tao and Koh Samui where the monsoon weather doesn't go. That's where the R & R really begins. Will see you there....

It's Been So Real

Now that the boys are literally flying around my house, it's time to say goodbye. They started out flying from countertop to chair, then their favorite spots kept getting higher and higher: top of the refridgerator, pot rack, now the top of the kitchen cabinets. We have held on as long as possible, but leave for Thailand in two days, so we will be delivering them to the flight cage where they will stay for about one month and learn how to hunt and just be owls.

It's been a quick four weeks, but what is amazing is how fast these magnificant creatures have changed in just this short time. They are absolutely gorgeous with personalities to match. They practice their hopping and last night hopped right out of their box! One of their favorite things to do is to sit in my front yard olive trees and just watch whatever happens by. Directly across the street are 100 year old Cottonwood trees, creek and bike trail. I'm hoping this is where we can release them when that time comes......probably sooner then I would like.

My Babies Are Almost Grown Up!

The boys are now about 8 weeks old. Every day, their looks change as they shed the fuzz and get their feathers. As the feathers thicken, their spots are now showing. We still call them punk birds because they still have fuzzy down on the tops of their heads, but it probably won't be long before that is gone too.
They practice flapping their wings alot. They can now do "soft" landings from their stick or from a table and we often hear them jumping around in their large box.
My guess is we won't have them too much longer, as they will be ready for the flight cage where they will spend about a month before being released.
We leave on vacation for Thailand July 12, so it will definitely be before then. When we return on the 28th, We will get to see them be released. That will be bittersweet, as we have grown very attached to these gorgeous creatures. Barn owls do not imprint, so our closeness will be a memory only in our minds, but a lovely one!

Foot Stomping Tantrum

Ok, so I came down this morning and the birds were making their usual "I'm hungry" grunt. In addition, they were literally stomping their feet...much like a child having a temper tantrum. It was absolutely halarious! So they promptly ate two chicks each, then were completely happy. To this point they pretty much stand flat footed, so this morning I introduced them to a tree branch. Balance is something they definately need to work on, but they were interested.
Their growth and development is so rapid and we can't get enough pictures. One wonderful thing about Barn Owls is that they don't imprint, so we can love, hold and be very hands on. Then once they're released, they forget it all.
Here's the latest photo op of Bill and Bob. By the way, Bill and Bob could actually be Billy and Bobette, as it's nearly impossible to tell at this age. But at this point, they just seem to match their guy names!

Growing So Fast!!

Every morning when I come downstairs, as soon as I say "Good morning boys", they start grunting, making their hungry sound. We have been able to count five distinct sounds: grunting (hungry), trilling (content, just because), laughing (only when a piece of food is in their mouth), chattering (when grooming each other), and hissing (which is halerious because it sounds like a broken toilet).
These birds have such amazing personalities. We adore them and even though their visit will be short, it's such a joy knowing this rehab will enable them to return to their natural environment.

Socks, fabulous socks! Twidletoes, out of Atlanta was established about six years ago and has the most beautiful handknitted Artisan footwear, designed and created entirely by hand. The socks are made of mostly wool and alpaca and only the highest quality yarns are used. It takes approximately 17,000 stitches to create each sock!

This pendant necklace features a charming little bunny with a Sterling Silver Wheelbarrow charm and beautiful green Kyanite Gemstone. The back of the pendant is a mirror. The image is soldered together with lead free silver solder and measures 1" square. It is securely sealed but not waterproof. The Sterling Silver ball chain is 16" in length.

After a number of years in the corporate world, Elizabeth desired an "outlet to use my brain and express my creativity". So she grabbed a how-to booklet and taught herself to knit. My featured artist for this week is Kris of LisianBlue, from Alburquerque, New Mexico. This talented artist does amazing handpainted glass, one-of-a-kind ornaments, stained glass treasures, beaded jewelry and beautiful art prints from her photographs of flowers.
Kris has been crafting since she was a young girl, when her grandmother taught her to crochet and knit. She instilled in her to never stop learning. Her mother taught her a love of nature and her father taught her to do whatever she does and to do it well.

She is the newest addition to my space, my happy place, my studio, and she does an excellent job of highlighting my designs. Decorating my studio is a never ending process and one of my favorite things to do. The Color Purple

One of my favorite colors....it can be cool with Silver or warm with Copper or Gold. Purple is a group of colors with a hue somewhere between violet and red. It is often worn as a symbol of royalty, religious rank or high office. Here I show a lovely and varied mix of jewelry ideas in this beautiful color...charms, Pearl, Crystal, Iolite, Amethyst, even an infant bracelet.

I wonder who once used this Sterling Silver demi spoon? Now it's a beautiful necklace pared with three Gemstone charms of faceted Aquamarine, faceted Cherry Quartz and a yellow Serpantine tulip.

The other is a beautiful little Sterling salt spoon. It is 2 3/8" with a 5/8" bowl. The twisted handle has decorative openwork at the top. It is pared with two charms of Swarovski Crystal, Sterling and Pearl. For more info, check out http://tuscanroad.etsy.com/
